Poem
Stirred by the sun’s gentle touch,
sleep began to drift and scatter.
On music’s lovely, flowing melody,
the heart welled up, overcome.
All around, the warmth of brotherhood;
from the mind’s inner depths, joy came shimmering up.
This morning was lovelier, far lovelier, than any other —
and to my astonished mind came the sudden knowledge:
today is Vijaya Dashami.
The mind, set free, took flight into the boundless sky —
higher and higher, farther and farther —
to gather up every joy of the past,
to tuck Mother and Father’s blessings
into the treasure-chest of the heart forever,
this mind soars on and on.
To fetch the garments dyed in love’s most beautiful colors,
sewn to cover a heart glittering star-bright with excitement,
from the place where Mother had put them away with such care —
this mind is flying.
Quarreling with brothers and sisters,
counting the dakshina rupees —
arithmetic freshly learnt, barely keeping up —
to gather those bittersweet moments of memory,
this mind is flying.
Sisters holding the kalash,
binding their maiti three times round
with the strong cord of affection,
placing the bright seven-colored tika on the forehead,
garlanding the neck with marigolds,
offering the auspicious sip of curd —
to raise those moments, alive, before the eyes,
this mind is flying.
The song of this mind swells with every passing moment —
how much more it will swell, who can say;
holding it back is hard, so hard.
The spring of Gangotri is bursting forth,
and this mind stands ready for the journey —
cleaving through immovable mountains,
striking both banks, stumbling, pressing on,
carving its own path as it goes,
may it flow ever forward.
The destination is clear:
the vast, deep, tranquil ocean
where struggle has no existence,
where discontent holds no reign —
and I have complete faith:
I will surely arrive there.
